Ingredients

For Daal:

  • Moong daal – 1 cup

  • Masoor daal – ½ cup

  • Turmeric powder – ½ tsp

  • Salt – to taste

  • Red chili powder – 1 tsp

  • Water – 3-4 cups

  • Green chilies – 2 chopped

  • Ginger garlic paste – 1 tsp

For Rice:

  • Basmati rice – 2 cups

  • Salt – 1 tbsp

  • Water – 3 cups

For Tadka (Tempering):

  • Oil/Ghee – 3 tbsp

  • Onion – 1 medium (sliced)

  • Garlic – 3-4 cloves (sliced)

  • Whole red chilies – 3-4

  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp

  • Curry leaves – few (optional)

Method

Step 1: Cooking the Daal

Wash the moong and masoor daal well and soak them for 30 minutes. In a pot, add daal, water, turmeric, salt, red chili powder, and ginger garlic paste. Cook until the daal becomes soft and tender. Slightly mash it with a spoon and set aside.

Step 2: Cooking the Rice

Wash the basmati rice and soak them for 20 minutes. In a separate pot, boil water with salt and add the rice. Cook until done and steam for a few minutes to make them fluffy.

Step 3: Preparing the Tadka

Heat oil or ghee in a frying pan. Add onion, garlic, whole red chilies, and cumin seeds. Fry until golden brown. If you like, add curry leaves for extra flavor. Pour this hot tadka over the cooked daal.

Step 4: Serving

Serve the daal with hot steamed rice and top it with fresh coriander and green chilies for garnish.

Tips

  • Always mix two types of daal for the best flavor.

  • If the daal turns too thick, adjust consistency by adding warm water.

  • Using ghee instead of oil enhances the taste of tadka.

  • You can also add tomatoes and fresh coriander for extra flavor.
